“Infrastructure decisions are never just technical.”
Dave Waddling · 2026-08-19
26 years ago I registered a domain. Now it's coming home.
On 2000-11-10 I registered waddling.com. I was working for a web hosting company at the time, so hosting it was free, a nice perk of the job.
Three years later I left that company and I moved my hosting to a US-based provider that had been recommended to me. That relationship lasted 23 years.
Two things changed my mind.
The political choice
The first is straightforward. I would rather not send my money to the United States right now. Americans made their choice at the ballot box (plenty now regret it), and I'm making mine. Keeping my hosting dollars in Canada is a decision I can control.
The practical proof
The second is more practical. On 2026-08-13, every website I host in the US went offline. All day. The cause was a power issue at a data centre in Phoenix, Arizona. That's not a one-off. The fragility of the US power grid has been well documented for years, and this was my own small proof of it.
So I've found a new home, in Canada, for waddling.com and everything else I host. The plan is set, and I'm starting the move soon.
Here's the thing: infrastructure decisions are never just technical. Where you host, who you pay, and what you depend on are also political and practical choices, whether we like it or not.
